When you stay at Hokitika Fire Station Apartments you’re never far from the action. We are a short drive from the Hokitika Gorge Walk and, for cycling enthusiasts, a few minutes from the West Coast Wilderness Trail.

The West Coast Wilderness Trail

A Grade 2 cycleway, part of the NZ Great Rides network, the West Coast Wilderness Trail is suitable for all levels of riders from novice to experienced. The mountain biking trails around Hokitika provide a variety of rides from ‘easy’ to ‘challenging’ – you can choose whether to tackle a short ride for fun or the full 132km over four days. The trail winds its way between Greymouth and Ross via Kumara and Hokitika on historic logging and gold mining trails and rewards you with views of coastline, lakes, mountains, rainforest and wetlands. Mountain bikes can be hired in Hokitika from Hokitika cycles & Sportworld on Tancred St or Westside Rides on Woodstock-Rimu Rd.

Hokitika Walks

Hokitika and the surrounding area has a wide range of beautiful walks so there’s something for every age and fitness level. Heritage walks, bush walks and beach walks – and of course, the stunning walk through the Hokitika Gorge. For those with a head for heights, you could also get a bird’s eye view of the rugged West Coast on their West Coast Treetop Walk. Find out which walks work best for you and your group.

Paparoa Track

This Great Walk crosses the Paparoa Range. It takes you through alpine tops, limestone karst landscapes and thriving rainforests, and provides breath-taking views. From the Paparoa Track, the Pike29 Memorial Track leads to the site of the former Pike River Mine.

Getting cleaned up

At the Hokitika Fire Station Apartments, we’ve got secure storage for bikes and outdoor equipment plus a fully equipped laundry and drying room. So, don’t worry about getting wet and muddy, everything is on hand to get yourself cleaned up and back out there – warm and dry!
